Carved Artwork by Grussenmeyer
The artwork in this gallery is completely hand carved by Doc G, in ivory, fossil ivory, pearl, bone, stag, exotic woods, corals, horns, and other rare materials. Many have eyes set with precious gem stones and Swarovski crystals. Some of the ivories are antiqued, using a secret technique passes on to Doc. Most of the artwork receives highlighting to bring out the details of the carving.
Doc G also collaborates with other well known artists and knifemakers for some of his projects.
His artwork is marked with his distinctive PG initials hooked together, and on rare occasions with hid full signature on larger pieces.
Inspiration for his carving themes comes from literature, movies, zoological and museum collections, other artwork, our natural world, and his own imagination. He also does commission work based upon your ideas and fantasies. Themes vary from fantasy to science fiction, prehistoric, wildlife, people.
His carvings give new life and personality to today’s natural findings and ancient materials. Sizes range from miniature to more than 12 inches. The types of art pieces can range from deep relief carvings to full blown 3-D carvings. He loves to do vignettes of life or fantasy, but also does full figured pieces, adapting them to the material size and shape at hand.
Dr. Grussenmeyer and his carvings have been featured in numerous magazine publications and books over the last two decades. He has been called a master carver by magazine editors. His carvings have also been placed in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art’s musical instrument section when he collaborated on famed bow-maker / jewelry-maker Henryk Kaston’s Renaissance violin bow collection, and the Randall Knife Museum in Florida.
